Alajuela

The name of the first canton in the province of Alajuela in Costa Rica is Alajuela. It is the birthplace of the national hero of Costa Rica, Juan Santamaria. Its capital is the provincial capital city of Alajuela.

The canton of Alajuela is subdivided into 14 districts (distritos):

San Ramon

In pre-Columbian times the territory that now the canton of San Ramon was inhabited by indigenous Huetar. The first settlers arrived in the region in 1840 were from these districts of Bethlehem, Alajuela and San José, mainly among whom were Messrs. San Ramón is the second canton in the province of Alajuela in Costa Rica.

The canton of San Ramón is subdivided into 13 districts (distritos):

Grecia

The city of Grecia, named the cleanest city in Latin America, is the third Canton of Alajuela province. The canton lies upon the ridges and valleys of the slope of the beautiful Poas Volcano and  is located in the country’s central outskirts, 20 km northwest of the main header of Alajuela. The canton covers an area of 395.72 square kilometres. Its climate is temperate humid, with cool weather / cold round of the 16th C to 27th C depending on location.

San Mateo

In pre-Columbian times the territory that now the canton of San Mateo, the fourth canton in the province of Alajuela in Costa Rica, was part of the dominions of the chief Coyoche. Around the Corner of San Mateo, a number of seismic sources that have repeatedly presented significant seismic activity, reaching even to cause considerable damage. The capital city of the canton is also called San Mateo.

The canton of San Mateo is subdivided into three districts (distritos):

  3. Jesús María

 

Atenas

The canton of Atenas is in the western region of the Central Plateau. It is a fairly compact canton, mountainous for the most part. The first settlers arrived in the area came from the cantons of Alajuela, Heredia, San José and Cartago. In the late eighteenth century they began to use the fertile land to settle there. Athens was established as the sixth city of Alajuela province on August 7, 1868. The entire county has a total population of 24,841 inhabitants, of whom 8,276 live in the capital city.
